Type math, get distortion. Good equations are often the smoothest-sounding distortions and are the backbone of many classic distortion plugins - so don’t sleep on this one. You don’t need a math PhD: start from the presets and learn the classic building blocks, then stack them in different ways. A few starters:

  • tanh(3*x) - the classic soft clip; raise the 3 for more aggression.
  • 1.5*x - 0.5*x^3 - the classic polynomial clipper.
  • sin(1.5*pi*x) - a wavefolder.

The most convenient part is the m variable: the Morph dial’s position mapped from 0 to 1, read in real time. For example, tanh((1 + 10*m)*x) goes from subtle to aggressive overdrive with a single knob.
